Between video games and television appearances, there have been quite a few different voices for Toy Story's beloved Buzz Lightyear.

Lightyear hit theatres on June 17, 2022, giving one of animation's most iconic characters an origin story. Buzz Lightyear is back on the big screen, with the film telling the story that inspired the toy from Toy Story. To bring this new version of the character to life, Pixar replaced Tim Allen with Chirs Evans, but this isn't the first time that Tim Allen hasn't voiced Buzz.

Since Tim Allen has had an illustrious career outside of the Toy Story series, several Buzz Lightyear-related projects didn't use the actor. Between video games and television appearances, there have been quite a few different voices for the famous Space Ranger of Star Command.

Arguably one of the most iconic voices in cinema is Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. Toy Story wouldn't have worked without Tim Allen and Tom Hanks as their performances ensured Buzz and Woody's place as one of the best pairs of frenemies in movies. The two characters started as rivals and quickly became friends, going on tons of adventures in various short films and sequels up until Toy Story 4.

When audiences think of "to infinity and beyond!" they likely think of Tim Allen's voice. If Pixar had one iconic line, it would be the one spoken by Tim Allen. He's intrinsically tied to the role in a way few voices are. It's not a stretch to believe that Buzz Lightyear is Tim Allen's legacy.

Tim Allen couldn't commit to a weekly animated TV series, so when it came time to this Buzz-centric spin-off, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Patrick Warburton took on the role. The series was the first attempt to show where the toy Buzz came from, so it had Buzz team up with various aliens from Star Command to fight the evil Zurg.

The series ran for 62 episodes so Warburton is almost as tied to the role as Tim Allen. However, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command didn't have the lasting impact of Toy Story. Still, Warburton made the character his own while also staying true to what had come before.

Toy Story 3 features two Buzz Lightyear voice actors. The first is Tim Allen, but the second is Javier Fernández-Peña. In Toy Story 3, Lotso needed a toy to help him so he reset Buzz to his factory settings, and when Woody and the gang try and fix him, they accidentally switch him to his Spanish language setting.

Spanish Buzz is a very different version of Buzz Lightyear. He's far more flirtatious and chivalrous, especially when it comes to Jessie. Fernández-Peña keeps the gravelly tone of Tim Allen while also adding a romantic and dramatic flair to it. Some of the best parts of Toy Story 3 come from his performance. Even though Reddit doesn't believe Toy Story should have gotten another sequel, it's really a good thing it did.

Tim Allen did a few Toy Story shorts after Toy Story 3 and one of the more popular ones was Small Fry. The short introduces a McDonalds-like restaurant that has Buzz Lightyear-inspired toys that come with the meals. There's a smaller and cheaper version of Buzz that wants to get played with so he breaks out and takes Buzz's place in Bonnie's backpack. How this little Buzz didn't blow it for all the toys in the world of Toy Story is anyone's guess, it's one of the things that makes no sense about the Toy Story franchise.

Teddy Newton is technically not playing Tim Allen's Buzz Lightyear, but he's the first Buzz Lightyear variant introduced who's not played by Allen. Newton voices a few smaller roles in Pixar films and is mostly part of the art department, but his Mini Buzz is a fun rendition of the iconic Tim Allen character.

Since Toy Story is one of the best Pixar films, at least according to Ranker, it makes sense that there would be more. When Pixar was just starting out, Toy Story was such a huge hit that they had made video games and short films to go along with it. Instead of Tim Allen, Pat Fraley stepped in to do the role of the iconic toy. He would pair up with Jim Hanks, who frequently voices Woody when Tom Hanks isn't available.

Fraley has done a lot of voice work but his most recognizable role might be Krang from the '87 TMNT animated series. Fraley was able to approximate Allen's voice very well and voiced him in Toy Story Treats, which ran for 15 episodes.

Disney Infinity and Kingdom Hearts both feature Buzz Lightyear and the character has been played by Mike MacRae. He started voicing the character when he signed on to do the Toy Story 3 video game and he's been the video game voice of the character ever since.

Like most of the actors who take on Buzz, MacRae does a close approximation of Tim Allen. He's probably the closest voice-a-like there is for the character so far. Oftentimes, like in Disney Infinities, his voice has been mistaken for Allen's.

For the new Pixar film, Lightyear, it was time to find a new voice for the iconic character, but not one that would stray too far from what people have come to love. Chris Evans appears as the character the Buzz Lightyear toy is based on and the movie finally reveals what Andy loved so much about him.

There are plenty of vocal callbacks to Tim Allen in Evans' performance but there's still enough to allow the actor to really make it his own. It's unlikely Evans will ever be as iconic in the role as Tim Allen, but it's clear the Buzz is in good hands.
